Launch of the Governorate - Based National Master Plan for Water Supply and Wastewater in Egypt
Under the auspices of and addressed by H.E. Eng. Ahmed El-Maghraby, Minister of Housing, Utilities and Urban Development of Egypt, and in the presence of H.E. Dr. Mohamed Nasr El Din, Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, the Governorate-Based National Master Plan for Water Supply and Wastewater was launched on 6th July 2009.

In October 2007 the Holding Company for Water and Wastewater (HCWW), which is considered the general coordinator of the whole project, contracted 23 consulting offices to develop master plans for the different governorates in addition to an international consulting office to prepare the National Master Plan for Water Supply and Wastewater. The Master plan was developed to cover the period between 2007 – 2037, 29 governorates in Egypt and an area of 877 000 km˛. The compilation of the data of the regional Master plans harmonized the databases allowing for queries of any kind as well as created a bi-lingual (Arabic-English) capital investment database for the use of the National government and international donors.

With the aim to further develop the water and wastewater sector in Egypt the EU supported the sector with a grant of 80 million Euros which was partially used to finance the development of the National Master Plan.
